The Original Oxford Comma

I would like to address those who clap and whistle in response to entertainment in the loudest possible manner. The function of clapping is to express an approval after something happens. If you like it, clap. If you don’t like it, don’t clap. The louder the clap is, the stronger you approve. This is the symbolism behind clapping. Whistling has the same purpose.

Unfortunately, many today feel the need to clap as loudly as they can, no matter their own opinion on whatever they just saw or heard. Members of a modern audience try to “outclap” one another, or worse yet—“outwhistle” one another. This is neither cute nor funny. It’s obnoxious and irritating.

Please keep in mind your opinion when responding to an entertainment performance.

Thank you.
